Security Comb Bayelsa Community For Missing DDC Machines
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa State has lost two of its Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines deployed to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the State to unknown persons.
The commission’s adhoc staff posted to Oporoma Ward one, where the incident occurred reported the matter to INEC office in Yenagoa, Tuesday.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Engineer Edwin Offor Nwatarali who made this known while briefing journalists in his office in Yenagoa said security agents had been dispatched to the area to trace the whereabouts of the missing machines.
He said the machines were to be used for Oporomma ward one, unit one and two polling stations, stating that while the search for machines were on, the commission had already configured a replacement.
According to the resident electoral officer, the initial hiccups associated with the registration had been surmounted, hence the exercise was now going in all corners of the state.
He further stated that a total of 1,805 DDC machines had been received and deployed to all the local government areas of the state, while 3,610 youths corps members were engaged for the job.
He, however, said that some NYSC members had refused to accept their posting to rural areas, especially the riverine parts of the state, thereby leaving some registration centres with only one corps member.
Engineer Nwatarali, denied knowledge of alleged importation of people from other states to register in certain centres, assuring that the allegations would be investigated.
“But I am assuring you that if that is true, the act is going to be useless because the machines are configured in a way that it will not take double registration’’, he added.
