Legionnaires Want Secretariat, Employment
The chairman of the Nigeria Legion in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, Major Michael Igoma (rtd) has renewed his call to the chairman of the council, Hon. Udi Odum to make good his promise of providing secretariat for the legion and employment opportunities for able bodied members of the legion.
Major Igoma who made the call at this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at Ayama, Abua central last Saturday said the move would go a long way in giving a sense of belonging to the veterans who sacrificed a lot to keep the peace and unity of the nation.
The ABOLGA Legion boss also solicited the cooperation of the council in empowering the wives and widows of the legionnaires.
He described the present cenotaph at Ayama as outdated when compared to others across the local government areas in the state, stressing the need for the erection of a new one.
While commending the various security agents in the area for good job, the retired major urged youths in the area to shun cultism, gangsterism and violence to make Abua/Odual Local Government Area peaceful place to live in.
In his response, the ABOLGA chairman, Hon. Odum re-echoed the commitment of his council to give a new meaning to the activities of legionnaires in the area.
Odum commended the legionnaires for their patriotism and sacrifices for the nation.
According to him, “we are not oblivious of the fact that legionnaires apart from sustaining the unity of the country during the secession in 1967-1970 also played an important role during the peacekeeping operations of the civil wars in Somalia, Liberia, Angola and Sierra-Leon”.
The chairman also used the occasion to commend the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for the provision of electricity to Abua Communities in less than four years in office.
He was also full of praises for the governor for re-awarding the contract for the construction of Omokwa ring road, Agada I- Otapha road project, modern primary and secondary schools, three health centres and other developmental projects.
The ABOLGA boss however, appealed to all sons and daughters of the area both within and outside to join forces in the task of promoting the unity and peace of the area even as he advised them to stay clear of electoral violence.
