Rivers Attorney-General Calls For Criminal Code Amendment
The Rivers State Ministry of Justice has proposed an amendment of some sections of the state criminal code to ensure a quick dispensation of justice in the state.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ken Chikere disclosed this in his office in Port Harcourt yesterday, during a courtesy call on him by the new executive of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt branch.
Hon. Chikere said the amendment, if carried out, will lead to the decongestion of prisons in the state and also check the excesses of some security agencies, particularly the police.
He also told the visiting lawyers that work at the ministry’s E-library has reached advanced stage, stressing that when commissioned, the library will be a referral centre, not only for lawyers but the entire Rivers public and beyond.
The state chief law officer also urged the different branches of the Bar Associations in the state to work together for a common good noting that the issue of subvention should be down-played as far as the branches are concerned.
He also promised to facilitate a courtesy call to the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by the association.
Earlier, the new chairman of the Port Harcourt branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Worgu Boms said it was the tradition of the Bar to always pay courtesy call on its members in government at the end of each election.
Barrister Boms stressed the need for the NBA to de-emphasis its reliance on government subventions, while calling for a well equipped library at the Ministry of Justice.
