Nigeria Records Lowest Polio Virus Outbreak In 10 Years
The Emir of Tsonga, Dr Haliru Yahaya, has said that the six wild polio virus reported this year was the lowest record in a decade in the country.
Yahaya, who is also the chairman of the National Primary Health Development Agency (NPHCDA), disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Minna yesterday.
He noted that the intervention of the traditional rulers played a significant role in the sharp decline of reported polio cases.
“In 2009, we had 20 reported cases of wild polio in the country and it has fallen to six new reported cases this year, now that traditional rulers are integral in the exercise,“ he said.
He commended the traditional rulers for their role in curbing the incidence of rejection of vaccines by parents.
“Areas that we were experiencing rejection have changed their attitude and now allow health personnel to administer the vaccine on their wards,” he said.
Yahaya said the agency and traditional rulers would continue to collaborate on the issue of vaccination until 100 per cent coverage was achieved for all the six childhood killer diseases in the country.
“We are now working on a total coverage of immunisation exercise, so that mothers and children can receive all their vaccination at a centre, ” he said.
He urged all the tiers of government to increase their support for the exercise, “so that the gains recorded in polio is not reversed by the upsurge of measles or celebro spinal meningitis”.
In a separate interview, the agency’s Director, Planning and Research, Dr Emmanuel Odu, also told newsmen that the agency was appreciative of the efforts of the traditional rulers in its vaccination campaign.
“They have actively mobilised their people not only to accept it but also to allow their children to be immunised.”
He said the agency would continue to seek closer collaboration with the traditional rulers as they are in the best position to ensure the success of the various immunisation campaigns.
