Nigeria Yet To Attain Democracy – Princewill
Former Action Congress (AC) leader in Rivers State, Prince Tonye J.T. Princewill has said that the nation is yet to attain full democracy in the country 11 years after it was restored.
Princewill who stated this in a press statement signed by his Media Assistant noted Nigerian citizens are disillusioned with very low morale and lacking dividends of democracy.
The former opposition boss regretted that most elected officers in the country have come to see democracy as a means to achieving affluence, adding that this explains the high rate of electoral fraud, infrastructural decay in various sectors of economy.
He urged President Goodluck Jonathan to shun distractions from those asking him to contest in 2011 election.
He however called on the Federal Government to explore intervention and immediate solutions where appropriate for tackling challenges in the moribund power sector, the implementation of electoral reforms and the Niger Delta issue.
Said he: “As we enter the second year of the second decade of our nation democracy which incidentally is the eve of another election year, 2010, he urged all Nigerians to take a more active role in building a more responsive and effective democracy”.
Quoting the American stateman, Daniel Webster, Princewill said: “Let us develop the resources of our land, call forth its power, build up its institutions, promote all its programme and ensure better welfare for the people”, he said.
