Group Tasks Jonathan On Better Economic, Social Reforms
A group based in the Netherlands has demanded assurances of better economic and social reforms from President Goodluck Jonathan to justify his presidential contest in 2011 election.
The group, Hope for the Niger Delta Campaign (HNDC), an NGO, in a statement on Wednesday in Warri, Defending Champions Italy Show Their Age In S’Africa, signed by its founder, Mr Sunny Ofehe, said Jonathan had the constitutional right to contest any election.
Ofehe noted that the present administration was riding on the “back of a shaky and unpopular process to power”.
Ofehe said as a result, the President must find a way to restore the people’s confidence and tackle the power supply problem, corruption and electoral reforms.
He said that if Jonathan could solve the power problem in the country, his name would be written in gold and Nigerians would forever remember him.
“This will surely define his tenure and possibly ensure his return to power, ” Ofehe said.
He advised that the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) should be allowed to operate independently without interference from government.
He described as “a right choice” the President’s appointment of Prof. Attahiru Jega as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ofehe described Jega as non-partisan and the best choice for INEC having been a member of the Justice Mohamed Uwais-led Electoral Reforms Commission.
He called for a complete implementation of the electoral reforms to ensure a transparent and trustworthy electoral process in the country.
Ofehe urged the President “not to allow the political cabal to dictate and overwhelm him with pressure to favour their insatiable lust for corruption.”
