ASUU Wants FG To Implement Agreement
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to be sincere and open in its implementation of the agreement reached with the union in November 2009.
Dr Samuel Jegede, a member of the ASUU agreement monitoring group, said in Lagos on Saturday that failure to implement the agreement would be a bad omen.
“Education in Nigeria will recede backward and the tradition of failure will continue if that agreement is not implemented with a sense of nationalism.
“The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan is enjoined to engage academics openly and constructively to salvage the sector,’’ he said.
Jegede said the 70 years retirement age for lecturers, which was part of the agreement, was yet to be implemented because the government was foot dragging.
He said that if the issue of retirement age was not promptly attended to by the National Assembly, it would cause suspicion among the lecturers.
It would be recalled that university autonomy, increased funding and the extension of the retirement age to 70 years were part of the agreement reached between the government and ASUU in November 2009.
The bill to pass the new retirement age into law is currently being debated at the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
Jegede explained that ASUU was in consultation with other unions in the academic sector to see how best to push Nigerian education to the level it ought to be.
Prof. Ojo Aremu of the Department of Electrical/Electronics, University of Lagos, said the proper implementation of the agreement would be a big plus to the current administration.
Aremu noted that lecturers in the universities would be more committed to their jobs if they perceived that the government was committed to honouring the agreement.
“Scholars will do more researches if they feel a sense of appreciation from the government and that can only be attained by implementing the agreement,’’ he said.
According to Aremu, university students will gain more when their teachers are fulfilled in what they do, rather than the frustration, hunger and poverty broadly expressed in their outlook.
