Rivers Bans Street Collection Of Revenue
Following reports of harassment of residents and visitors by persons operating as revenue agents in the state, the Rivers State Government has banned all forms of revenue drive and collection by agents along the streets and on major roads in the state.
Governor Amaechi who announced ban in Port Harcourt Monday, during the monthly Inter- Governmental meeting said such illegal collections on the streets is a threat to ecurity and a menace to society.
He expressed concern over the development especially as it affects members of the public who he said are regularly harassed and swindled of cash and possession under the guise of collecting revenue.
The State Chief Executive said all those involved including local government chairmen should henceforth stop all such forms of revenue drive which he noted had yielded no appreciable returns either to the councils or state government.
Governor Amaechi said anyone found brandishing stickers or forms on the road for the purpose of collecting revenue should be reported to the nearest Police Station and promptly arrested.
Meanwhile, all revenues should be paid into appropriate accounts in the banks and no cash should be paid to any agent on the road.
All government departments and local government councils are advised to comply.
