… Merges ICTD, MOI
The new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department formerly under the office of the Governor has now been merged with the Ministry of Information in Rivers State. The hint was dropped by the State Commissioner for Information, Mrs Ibim Seminetari who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Dr Godwin Mpi at the formal opening ceremony of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) press week on Monday in Port Harcourt. Mrs Seminatari said with the new development, the name of the ministry would henceforth be, Ministry of Information/ Communications. The Governor who explained that it was government’s decision to give priority to promoting ICT and technological advancement in the state re-echoed the state governor’s plan to re-organise the three public owned media, assuring that the restructuring would make them effective like their private counterparts. On pleas by the NUJ Executive for the construction of a befitting secretariat for the union, Mrs Seminatari assured that the government would study the matter and act accordingly. However, she pledged the support of the present administration to the activities of the NUJ, while urging journalists in the state to use their job in guiding the authorities, “the present administration does not believe in yellow journalism but in development journalism”, she added. Earlier in his remarks, chairman of the occasion and founder of the Silverbird Communications, Mr Ben Murray-Bruce harped on the need for objective journalism.
