RSUST, UNIPORT Yet To Resume …One Week After ASUU Strike
Despite the suspension of the four months old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) normal academic activities are yet to resume at the University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Nkpolu, Port Harcourt.
When The Tide visited the two campuses, most classroom were still under lock and key while students were seen milling around.
Some of the students who spoke with The Tide expressed surprise at the attitude of lecturers for refusing to turn up for classes, stressing that the situation is affecting their academic development.
At the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, some lecturers were seen in their offices, but no lecture was going on.
When contacted, the chairman of the university of Port Harcourt chapter of ASUU, Dr Andrew Efemini said that the union decided to keep away from classrooms to observe the federal government reactions on the two weeks deadline given by ASUU to meet the agreement reached with it.
Dr Efemini also said that ASUU is in solidarity with its sister unions SSANU and NASU over their demands.
In her reactions, the Chairperson of ASUU RSUST, Dr Emilia Jaja who echoed similar sentiments however said that lecturers would not go back to classrooms until their two months salary are paid by the university authority to enable them mobilise and resume work.
