…Plans To Reform Govt Media Organisations
I would not spend a kobo until I see changes in these organizations,” with these words Governor Chibuike Amaechi made public his plans to reorganize the three media organisations owned by the state government, yesterday.
Governor Amaechi clearly and unequivocally confirmed speculations that his administration was poised to privatizing moribund state owned media organizations which include; The Tide, Radio Rivers and RSTV.
Speaking as guest at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Platform, a personality interview forum organised by the state council of the body to scrutinize government officials’ performance in office , the Rivers State chief executive declared that his administration would not spend a dime in terms of funding the organizations until a new legal framework, mode of operations and staffing are spelt out.
Governor Amaechi who used the forum to list the strides made so far by his government directed the general managers of the government owned media to liaise with the commissioner for Information to work out the new frame work.
Emphatic about the new plan, Governor Amaechi observed that the media organizations need to be re-organised to be commercially viable and independent, adding that, a situation where all the stories are about government does not work.
He said each of the media houses would have a new board of trustees saddled with managing the firms since government would sell some of its shares to give room for partnership.
If the reorganization is achieved by next year February, he assured that government can only release funds to drive the process, noting that a new printing press would be established for commercial purposes.
He argued that there was no way unspent budgetary funds would be sunk into establishments that are not commercially viable, while assuring that his administration would establish a radio station tailored to operate independently as a private medium by next year.
Speaking on the state of roads within the state, the Governor stated that the road rehabilitation agency has done well in repairing some bad spots within the city.
Following the state of bad roads within Oyigbo area, he promised to swing into action, stressing that the state commissioner for works would be ordered to study the area before work would commence.
