Two Arraigned Over Attempt To Kidnap Rivers Lawyer
The Rivers State Police Command has arraigned two suspects in a Chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt in connection with an alleged attempt to kidnap a lawyer, Barrister Tamuno Igbikiberebima at his residence, near the state capital.
It would be recalled that Igbikiberebima, a worker with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) told newsmen at the Police Headquarters in Port Harcourt, last December; how he disarmed AK-47-wielding men who attempted to kidnap him in front of his residence at Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The police later arrested the two suspects identified as Godspower Saturday and David Simeon in the course of their investigation.
The suspects, who were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Beauty Okere, are facing a seven-count charge, including attempted kidnap and armed robbery of four persons.
However, the chief magistrate declined to entertain the matter for lack of jurisdiction, and directed the case file to be transferred to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
She also adjourned the matter to February 24, pending the outcome of the DPP’s legal advice.
Meanwhile, one of the four victims, who were robbed by the suspects before they attempted to snatch the lawyer, has narrated her experience.
“It was at the NNPC filling station. They drove in and stopped at my pump. After putting the N3,000 fuel they asked for, he (one of them) was still asking me for the money. That was how he brought out a gun and pointed at me,” she said.
