Buhari, APC And The Anti-Corruption Mantra (1)
President Mohammad
Buhari (PMB) and the APC rode to power on Buhari’s reputation as an uncommon and incorruptible politician among other reasons. Even though the Dictionary definition of corruption is pretty simple (unless you are Goodluck Jonathan), I am constrained to say that virtually all Nigerians cannot identify corruption when they meet ‘him’ on the highway. Regrettably, like most Nigerians, neither President Buhari nor his APC understand the true meaning of the word corruption.
Permit me to start with a private tale. About 30 years ago, as a young Attorney whose Dad would pester about the need to go to church on Sunday, I put my father to some test. One Sunday morning when he brought up his church issue, I played the devil’s advocate on him. I asked him on your way to church this morning, if some security operatives from the Military Governor’s office met you and requested you to come with them to meet the Governor to sign a N10 million contract for which all you need to execute the job was N4million and that you would give the Governor’s boys N3million and you will earn N3million all within a week, would you go with them?” Caveat-In those days there was no kidnapping. My church and God-loving father and a very good man if ever there was one, did not have any issues in picking up the job. In justification he reminded me that most of his projected profit will go to the new St. Thomas Church that was under construction. He further stated that the money will enable him expand his assistance to widows and orphans in our community. Even this good man did not get it.
Now back to the matter on hand. In recent days all we have heard from PMB and his triumphalist APC is that they are determined to root out and kill corruption before corruption kills Nigeria. In pursuance of that noble objective, there has been a gale of sacks and dismissals at the perceived citadels of corruption, namely, NNPC, NIMASA, etc. The APC has also been releasing all manner of lists of people and places where billions of dollars or naira had been allegedly looted by the Jonathan administration. But I am afraid, PMB and the APC are worse than the Ethiopian Enoch in the Bible who when confronted by the Apostle Paul to know if he understood what he was reading, promptly confessed that he could not understand if no one taught him. Remember that the Enoch in those days was a well-read man.
Jurists might argue that the end justifies the means and that because of the dangerous level to which the ineffectual GEJ administration had allowed corrupt acts to fester, it did not matter even if corrupt funds and means were used to oust him to save the nation. Put differently, even if the funds used to kick PDP out of power at the centre was looted from some State Governments; it is fair provided the new Government once installed begins to give corruption a bloody nose. Virtually all Nigerians agreed that Jonathan was a hapless and incapable leader who needed to go. Most Nigerians also concede that substantial funds and huge logistical support was required to oust him. The APC, starting from PMB to his dear wife to most of the APC Governors have in recent times confirmed to the world that their campaign was substantially funded by Ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. The claim in the press is that the young man supported his party with sums ranging from N50-70 Billion in the last presidential election. It is also an established fact that PMB traversed the length and breadth of this nation for his campaign in the aircraft belonging to the government and people of Rivers State.
This brings us to the core of this subject. This writer has been waiting in vain to hear Mr. President apologise to the people of Rivers State and indeed the entire nation on the fact that he accepted the use of the said aircraft and substantial campaign funds from the coffers of Rivers State. Till date, the ex-governor has continued to show up around the corridors of power in Abuja. PMB has further made the cardinal mistake of having him in his US entourage. My dear President, you cannot be fighting corruption while you are at the same time hobnobbing with persons who are clearly very corrupt. I have used Amaechi and Rivers State as a template for the rest of the nation. That is my State of origin and I know it more than I know any other State.
It is easy to castigate this writer by saying that Amaechi, like every Nigerian is innocent until proven guilty. After all, he has never been charged to court much less having a conviction against him. This is a legitimate statement. But a few facts are not impeachable in this saga. First, Amaechi was not by any stretch of the imagination rich when he became the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly in 1999. Between 1999 and 2015, he had not done any other job other than public service. If you add all his lawful earnings over this period and assume that he never spent a dime on fuel or clothing or church offering, he would still not have a billion naira to his name. And he is praised for funding the party 80% in the election. Add to this the fact that the Rivers State aircraft was put at the disposal of PMB for his presidential campaigns. This aspect of the saga becomes even more painful when you recall that close to 90% of the Rivers electorate rejected PMB at the last polls. So their aircraft was forcibly put to the use of a man they soundly rejected at the polls. One had expected that the new Government in Rivers State should by now have filed civil suits in the High Court against the APC demanding a refund of their monies that was used by the party and the cost of flying their Presidential candidate all over the country in their State jet.
