Bank Tasks SMEs On Operational Efficiency
Access Bank Plc has
tasked Small and Medium Scale Enterprise (SME) operators on the need to ensure operational efficiency of their businesses to access bank loans from financial institutions in the country.
The Executive Director, Business Banking Division of the bank, Mrs Titi Osuntoki stated this in Lagos during a workshop training for the SMEs operators by the bank.
Osuntoki said SME operators need to acquire the basic methods of business and financial management to sustain the continuity of their businesses.
She said the bank has undertaken the capacity development initiative of the SMEs operators to provide strategic solutions on how they could enhance operational efficiency of their businesses.
She explained that the inability of most SME operators to access finance from banks in the country was as a result of the SMEs informal management structure which tend to put doubt in the banks on the credibility of such business enterprise.
The informal management structure of such business enterprises according to her, has emboldened source banks to engage organizations like the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and individual consultants to educate operators on key managerial skills that would not only help small businesses access funds but also ensure the continuity of such business.
The bank’s executive director said Access Bank Plc has engaged organizations to train SME operators nationwide on such areas as inventory management, supply churn management, book keeping and leadership with a view to positioning the business operators for easy access to bank finance.
She said Access Bank Plc aims to be a Tier I SME bank through integrated partnership and provision of proactive solution and support to SMEs operators, stressing that SMEs, operators have the capacity to handle big project without difficulties through organizational support.

Sugar Tax ‘ll Threaten Manufacturing Sector, Says CPPE
In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer, CPPE, Muda Yusuf, said while public health concerns such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases deserve attention, imposing an additional sugar-specific tax was economically risky and poorly suited to Nigeria’s current realities of high inflation, weak consumer purchasing power and rising production costs.
According to him, manufacturers in the non-alcoholic beverage segment are already facing heavy fiscal and cost pressures.
“The proposition of a sugar-specific tax is misplaced, economically risky, and weakly supported by empirical evidence, especially when viewed against Nigeria’s prevailing structural and macroeconomic realities.
The CPPE boss noted that retail prices of many non-alcoholic beverages have risen by about 50 per cent over the past two years, even without the introduction of new taxes, further squeezing consumers.
Yusuf further expressed reservation on the effectiveness of sugar taxes in addressing the root causes of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
