Correspondents Decry CP’s Actions
The Federated Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), yesterday, called the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mbu Joseph Mbu, to soft-pedal his attack on the media in the state, particularly his verbal threat on the Bureau Chief of The Nation newspapers for the South-South, Bisi Olaniyi.
Mbu had at a press briefing characterised The Nation and its bureau chief in the South-South as biased, and demanded an apology from Bisi Olaniyi for doing his professional duties.
But the correspondent chapel, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Ernest Chinwo and Secretary, Amaechi Okonkwo, took exceptions to the embattled police commissioner’s views and demands, viewing it as a subtle threat to the freedom of the media industry in the state.
“We take special note of utterances of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, who on Friday, May 10, 2013, lashed out at a national newspaper, particularly The Nation, and threatened to attack the correspondent of the organisation for performing his lawful duties.
“We hereby condemn, in strong terms, the statement of the state chief law enforcer and state clearly that, as correspondents in the state, we have been discharging our responsibilities with utmost professionalism and cannot take sides on matters of politics or politicians.
“Our duty remains to report events as we see them without fear or favour, and based on facts available to us.
“In doing this, we rely solely on the ethics of the profession which stipulates reporting both sides of an event, and therefore state categorically that we are obliged to persons and sources who grant access to journalists.
“We therefore refuse to be held responsible for any individual who denies the press access when contacted to get his side of the story”.
