Experts Task Rivers Youth On Volunteering Services
Youth in Rivers State have been charged to imbibe the spirit of volunteering services to others in the society.
Dr Carmelita Agborubere gave the advice Wednesday in Port Harcourt while delivering a public lecture at a one-day capacity building workshop for community based youth organizations in the state and organised by the state Ministry of Youth Development.
In his paper titled, “The Importance of Volunteering Services,” she described volunteerism as ability to render assistance or services to others in the society out of one’s volition without demanding or expecting payment.
She urged them to use their individual skills, expertise and professionalism to render selfless services to others stressing that government alone cannot do everything needed in the society but that through selfless efforts, such gaps could be filled.
“As unemployed graduates, there are several things you can do to change the lives of others,” she remarked, emphasizing that such efforts help to creatre spirit of generosity, build managerial skills, improve ones resume as well as open doors to other things beneficial to the society.
She admonished youths to shun the attitude of staying glued to televisions or involvement in other ventures that are of little or no benefit to themselves and society adding that by assisting others around you, one becomes agent of positive change.
A second lecture delivered by Mr King Chris Odogu and titted, “The Economic Opportunities Available to the Youths of Rivers State,” emphasised the importance of building ones capacity before going into economic ventures.
Mr Odogu said a lot of areas abound for youths in the state to go into business production that could provide employment to themselves and others instead of waiting for government to do everything for them. He mentioned agriculture, mining and sports, amongst others.
Special Adviser to governor Rotimi Amaechi on Skills Acquisition, Mrs Mary Alagoa said 120 youths had been sent to PTI Warri by the present administration and urged the youths to be serious, prayerful and make due advantage of numerous opportunities provided by the Amaechi administration to better their lives.
The theme of the workshop was, “Towards Revitalising the Spirit of Volunteering Services Amongst the Youth” and representatives of community based youth organisations from the 23 local government areas participated while six youth organizations received awards for their economic ventures and projects.

HYPREP Tightens Security At Project Sites
Following the rupture of the ground tank of its water facility in Ebubu Community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has tightened security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
HYPREP, which dropped this hint in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Dr Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, said the Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey had given the directive for security to be tightened across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
Mba-Nwigoh noted that the tightening of security across the project sites has become necessary to forestall interference with the facilities.
He further disclosed that following the rupture of the ground tank of the Ebubu water facility, a team led by HYPREP’s Director of Technical Services, Prof Damian-Paul Aguiyi has visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation, stressing that the water facility has been cordoned off for public safety.
The statement indicated that following the incident, HYPREP has henceforth barred non-project personnel and non-facility staff from gaining access into any of its active project sites in Ogoniland without authorisation.
While appealing to residents of Ebubu Community and the public to remain calm, the Head of Communications assured them that the Project is taking prompt steps to restore water to the community, saying, the cause of the unfortunate incident is being investigated.
He equally noted that the Chief Security Officer of HYPREP has been directed to immediately tighten security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
The statement said HYPREP is deeply concerned about the incident, stressing that despite the setback, the Project reiterates its commitment to delivering sustainable cleanup in Ogoniland.
