‘Agip Flyover Accessible By August’

The Rivers State Government says it is putting measures in place to ensure that the Agip flyover, reputed to be the longest in the state, is put to use by the end of August, 2011.

The State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi made this known yesterday in an interview with newsmen during an unscheduled inspection tour of some road projects embarked upon by the state government, in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas.

The governor, who explained that some of the road projects were being slowed down because of the rains, however, assured that some remedial measures would be provided for the Elimgbu, Eneka-Igwuruta road as well as the floor plane for the Obiri Ikwerre flyover to ease movement.

He noted that contract for the Rumuokrushi, Eneka, Igwuruta road was awarded in 2009, but regretted that the job was abandoned, emphasising that the State Executive Council had resolved to re-award the road contract.

Governor Amaechi explained that the contractors for the Chief Godpower Ake road, Ken Saro-Wiwa road, Ada-Geroge road and the Obiri Ikwerre axis of the East-West road are on site but could not do much in view of the rains and therefore appealed to residents and people of the state to be patient with them.

The governor noted that only few roads were yet to be awarded in the city, assuring that the Commissioner for Works has been directed to compile a list of such roads for the next round of contract awards.

On the Woji-Slaughter Bridge undergoing rehabilitation, the governor said his administration values the lives of residents of Port Harcourt, noting that the state government discovered that the bridge was in bad condition, hence the decision to rehabilitate it and advised the public to exercise a little patience to enable the contractor complete the rehabilitation work in the next few weeks.

According to him, “government is currently reconstructing roads in Port Harcourt Township, constructing drainages in all the streets, over-laying the roads so that they can be usable”, emphasising that the same exercise would be carried out in the D/Line and Diobu axis of Port Harcourt.

On the Ogbogoro road, the governor said contract had already been awarded on the road, adding that the contractor is waiting for the rains to subside to commence work as it would be wasteful to do the road under the heavy rains.

The governor appealed to the people to bear with the state government as roads are not finished in one day, while acknowledging the suffering of the people because of the rainy season.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.
