2011 Elections: NDLEA Seeks Stakeholders’ Cooperation On Drug Barons
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is on the lookout for suspected drug barons who may be planning to contest in the 2011 general elections, its spokesman, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, has said.
Ofoyeju told newsmen yesterday in Lagos that the agency was willing to partner with stakeholders on this issue.
“As the general elections are approaching, it is the view of the agency that drug barons should not be elected into any political position.
“The Chairman of NDLEA, Mr Ahmadu Giade has promised to cooperate with stakeholders who want to get information about any person relating to drug trafficking.
“When we get the list of politicians cleared for the election, we will check our records about the persons,” he said.
According to Ofoyeju, if any of the politicians is in the NDLEA’s list of drug convicts, it will say so; if any person is under investigation or has been convicted, the information will be given to whosoever needs it.
He, however, said that no person or institution had requested for such information from the agency as at now.
Ofoyeju stressed that no matter the year of the case, the agency would be willing to oblige any information on drug barons from its data bank.
“We are vested with the power to coordinate all drug laws and enforcement. Anything that would dent the image of Nigeria will be resisted by the agency,” he said.
He, however, reiterated that the agency had no powers to stop any person from aspiring to any political office.
“But we have the powers to investigate, prosecute and if found guilty, we will confiscate the proceeds or property from the illicit business.
“Members of the public can stop individuals they know are drug lords by obtaining information from the agency,” Ofoyeju stressed.
Ofoyeju said that between January and September, 2010, about 4,622 persons were arrested for drug trafficking across the federation.
He said that out of the figure, 1,055 had been prosecuted while 97, 400 kilogrammes of drugs were seized within the period.
