Activists Protest Quit Notice To Prostitutes

Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has challenged the notice given to prostitutes to quit Abuja.

In a protest letter signed by Mr Emmanuel Onwubiko, National Coordinator of the association, the activists said the FCT administration’s action was a breach of the principle of fundamental human rights.

“The members of the Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) write to you in protest of the 72-hour ultimatum given to prostitutes in Abuja recently.

“This is because we have been duly informed by some innocent victims of the various harassment by police operatives who said they are acting on your instruction to arrest any prostitute seen on the road.

“It may interest you to know that police operatives now stop even cab drivers, carrying only females and ask them to surrender themselves as prostitutes to be arrested.

“This practice amounts to arbitrary arrest and a violation of the right to human dignity as enshrined in Section 34 of the 1999 constitution.

“It may interest you to know that this harassment by police operatives is caused by the ultimatum you gave to prostitutes in Abuja to leave town or face the wrath of the law,” the letter stated.

It urged FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed to instruct the police operatives to desist from harassing the female citizens in the city since they could not differentiate prostitutes from decent female citizens.

The minister said while giving the ultimatum that it was necessitated by the increasing manner the activities of commercial sex workers were spreading in the territory.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
