Three Die In Collapsed Building
Three people died on Saturday when a three-story building under construction collapsed, and trapped 15 others working there.
According to an eyewitness account, the building, meant to be an attachment to Uyi grand hotel and suites, located on Otaru road in Auchi, Edo State collapsed in the early hours of Saturday, trapping some workers who were sleeping in the building.
The Area Planning Officer in Auchi, Mr Egualeoma Mathew, while speaking with newsmen, ascribed the disaster to substandard materials and poor design, adding that the builder contravened the approved plan.
“A storey building was approved for the builder recently; I wonder why they erected a three-storey building,” he said.
Egualeoma, who said the building lacked total supervision on the part of the site engineer, advised contractors and site engineers to always attach importance to adequate supervision in order to avoid disasters.
Recounting his experience, one of the survivors, who gave his name as Sunday, said: “I only heard heavy noise when I was making calls, I don’t know what happened next.’’
