Mane Set For Liverpool’s Reward
Senegalese international Sadio Mane is set to be offered an extended deal at Liverpool following the contract extension of Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah.
This comes off the back of manager Jurgen Klopp saying he wants to reward his players after Salah and Roberto Firmino agreed to extend their stays on Merseyside until 2023.
Mane signed a five-year contract when he arrived at Liverpool from Southampton for £30 million in 2016, but Klopp feels the striker’s 20-goal haul last season deserves reward in the form of loyalty.
“When I speak about the good mood in the club, that is not only in the stands,” said Klopp.
“We are Liverpool as a team and the boys want to be part of it.
“That’s really cool and it’s a big achievement for the club because of these boys.
“Bobby Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, and a lot of the others as well, could play for pretty much any team in the world.
“It is an improved situation that these players don’t use us and then go.
“It’s cool but now we all together have to deliver. Sign your contracts but now, go again,” he said.
Klopp no longer wants players to see Liverpool as a stepping stone to ‘bigger and better’ clubs like Philippe Coutinho who made his name at Anfield before making his move to Barcelona for £142 million.
Klopp went onto add that his fab three have ensured the South American’s departure to the Nou Camp did not have a negative effect on the club.
“You cannot replace Phil Coutinho with exactly the same kind of player,” added the Liverpool manager.
“I don’t want to put one of my players in the position where people will now say constantly ‘he’s the Phil replacement’.
“I think the biggest thing we did in the second half of last season was that we didn’t need to speak too much about Phil. That wasn’t clear in January.
“We don’t need to replace Phil. We need to make a squad for the next year.
“Out there on the market, there isn’t a Phil Coutinho-lite. It’s not there.
“But there are a lot of good players and we have brought a few of them in,” he said.
