FG Backs SON On War Against Fake Products
Following the influx of
fake and sub-standard items into the country, the Federal Government has restated its resolve in backing the Standards Oganisation of Nigeria (SON) to halt such influx.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, reiterated the full backing of government when SON management paid him a courtesy call in Abuja on Tuesday.
A statement by SON’s spokesman, Mathias Bassey, quoted the SFG as calling for support of the citizenry in the fight against corruption in all facets of the nation’s life.
Lawal stressed the central role of standards and quality assurance in the nation’s efforts at diversifying its economy away from oil to other areas such as agro and allied products and solid minerals amongst other local consumption and export.
According to the SGF, SON’s mandate is to promote standardization and quality assurance activities in Nigeria, which is key to the nation’s diversification process, particularly with regard to international acceptance of Nigeria’s produce and other export commodities and products.
Lawal stated that standard remained a key bench mark for facilitating trade and investment activities among nations.
He enjoined the SON DG to work closer with all relevant ministries and agencies of the government as well as stakeholders in the organised private sector to reverse the trend of rejection of Nigeria’s product export.
Responding, the SON DG, Osita Aboloma, expressed appreciation to the federal government for the confidence it reposed in him to take the agency to the next expected level.
He promised to deploy all available resources to repositionthe organisaiton towards delivering on its mandate.
