Ministry Inuagurates Committee On Flood Control
The Rivers State Ministry
of Environment has inaugurated a 7-Man Ministerial Committee on Flood Control in response to series of alerts raised by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on imminent flooding in parts of the country.
Performing the inauguration, Permanent Secretary, Dr. Godwin Mpi who is also the chairman of the committee, charged members to be proactive in order to avert the re-occurrence of the devastative flooding in the state.
He explained the need for such a committee saying it was its responsibility to advise government professionally on steps to be taken in the long, middle and short runs to control and avert flooding in the state.
Mpi expressed confidence in the ability of the committee to do a thorough job, and encouraged them to remain resolute in the discharge of their duties.
Responding, the Vice Chairman of the committee, Sir Lawrence Igwe, who incidentally is the director, Flood and Erosion Department of the ministry, thanked the permanent secretary for the inauguration, and promised the co-operation of members to achieve set goals.
Other members of the committee are, Mr. Emmanuel Oye, Engr. Godwin Dappa, Engr. Okubo Braide, Mr. Abel Jeremiah and Mr. Eric Godam.
The committee’s terms of reference include: Preparation of short and long term plans for flood management in the state, proffer mitigation measures in the event of flood emergency in the state, establish synergy with local, state and federal agencies on flood and erosion control, any other matters related thereto.
It would be recalled that NIMET had consistently sounded series of warning of imminent flooding in parts of the country especially states along the Rivers Benue and Niger routes as a result of high rainfall and eventual release of excess water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroun and Kainji Dam in Nigeria which will definitely induce serious flooding like it did in 2012.
Here is Rivers State, the areas prone to this flooding are Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Abua/Odual, Asari Toru, Akuku Toru, Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas.
