Provost Assures On Health Tech Students’ Welfare
The Acting Provost of
the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology, Dr. Nnamdi Amadi, has assured students of the institution that in the next two weeks their hostel will be revamped.
Dr. Amadi, who gave the assurance on the heels of last weeks students’ protest over poor sanitary condition of the hostels, stated that a total renovation of hostels will be carried out.
This, he said will include overhaul of broken down facilities in the hostel as well as a strict check on the number of occupants in a room.
It will be recalled that students of the institution carried out a peaceful protest last week against unfavourable sanitary condition in the hostels.
These conditions, according to the students, include about 12 students occupying a room and the non-functioning of facilities such as water, light, etc.
Towards resolving the issues raised by the students during the peaceful demonstration, the authority of the school, according to the provost, has provided a power generating set to provide regular power supply, and refurbished existing mono pumps to enhance water supply.
On the issue of the students’ allegation of 12 students in a room, the provost explained that officially four bed spaces are provided in a room, “and it is expected to contain two students per bed, making a total of 8 students per room.
“But these students harbor their relations and friends. This is why you sometimes find more than eight students in a room, so, whose fault is it, if there are more than eight occupants in a room?”
The provost used the opportunity to state categorically that management of the institution are doing everything possible within its financial limit to ensure the comfort of its students, and staff.
“This is why we are doing everything within our might to ensure beyond the provision of social amenities, all programs of the college are accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)”, he said.
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state. According to him, constructive media engagement remains essential in creating public awareness on educational reforms, students’ welfare, infrastructural improvements, and other interventions being implemented by the state government.
