The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), has inaugurated its UBE unit officers in the 23 local government areas of the state, with a charge for them to shun gossip and rumour-mongering in the discharge of their duties.
The oath of office was administered to the officers in Port Harcourt last Thursday by former Assistant Secretary of the union, Comrade Tony Ochiagha.
While administering the oath, Ochiagha stressed the need for unity of purpose among the officers in carrying out their new assignments, saying, “being labour leaders entails making sacrifices at the expense of your personal comfort.”
Also speaking at the occasion, state Chairman of NCSU, Comrade O.T. Lilly-West congratulated the officers on their successful elections, and urged them to shun gossip and rumour-mongering in the discharge of their duties.
He assured that his administration was poised to carve a new image for the union, anchored on justice and truth, stressing that the union was not a place for money sharing.
According to him, the union under his leadership would continue to reach out to all members.
The state vice chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council also took time off comment on the newly introduced Contributory Pension Scheme for civil servants in the state, saying, what the union was bothered about was its implementation.
He said the union was not actually against the government’s policy, but urged the state government to tie all loose ends to ensure its effective implementation.
In her welcome address, the chairperson of UBE unit of the union, Comrade (Mrs) Kesy West expressed delight that the unit had been getting its rebates regularly, and urged the officers to always support the Chairman of the union, Comrade O.T. Lilly-West whom she described as intelligent and wonderful.
