FCDA Continues Demolition Of Illegal Structures In FCT
The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) on Tuesday carried out another round of demolition of “illegal structures” at Galadimawa, a settlement in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
The exercise began on Monday with the demolition of 25 houses belonging to non-indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory.
Yayaha Yusuf, the Director of Control at the FCDA, told newsmen that the demolition was part of efforts to clear the territory of illegal structures and enhance security.
Yusuf said the FCT administration was concerned over the emergence of illegal structures within settlements in the territory but gave an assurance that houses belonging to indigenes would not be touched till they had been resettled.
“The Federal Capital Territory Administration is seriously concerned with the emergence of illegal structures, especially in areas where you cannot know their addresses.
“And if people carry out any misdemeanour, you cannot trace them to any particular address, and so we are cleaning the place not only for aesthetics reason but for security reason.
“We are not touching the indigenes, who have been here before the FCT was established.
“We are dealing with people who have taken advantage of the fact that these villagers have not been resettled and came here to buy land illegally,’’ he said.
The director denied allegations that people were only given one week notice before the demolition, insisting that they were given enough time to move out of the area.
He explained that the FCDA met with the village head of the community in November 2011 on the demolition and stressed that the people were notified.
On the number of houses to be demolished, Yusuf said “we do not talk about numbers because when we start to talk about numbers, you are counting miseries, people’s miseries.
“We are just trying to clean the place of illegal structures and shanties,’’ he said.
Alhaji Musa Barde, the Village Head of Galadimawa, who was at the scene, said he would meet with the FCDA demolition team and sort out things with them.
The Chairman of AMAC, Mr Micah Jiba, who was sighted at the scene, urged the authority concerned to resettle the people before the demolition of their houses.
The Tide learnt that some youths who had mobilised to stop the exercise later allowed the demolition team to carry out the assignment after the district head met with the FCDA officials.
Our correspondent report that the residents of the community had approached the FCT High Court in Kubwa to stop the demolition by the FCDA till after the people had been resettled.
Residents were seen trying to salvage their belongings before their buildings were demolished.
