Rivers Transport System, Best In Nigeria – Don
It has been observered that Port Harcourt , the Rivers State capital, is one of the cities that have the best transport system in the country.
The managing director, KAMI Enterprises Nigeria, Dr Jude Nnokam, who made the observation on Monday during an interview with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt said the success in the transportation system in the state is largely credited to the state government policy to allow privation sector participation in the transport sector, in which the Skye Bank transport scheme, Diamond Bank transport service, Port Harcourt City Bus Services and others, came on board to complement the inadequate commercial transport operators. Dr Nnokam who is also a part-time lecturer with the Rivers State University of Science and Technology said the public private partnership adopted by Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s administration is a welcome development especially in the transport sector, saying that the era of commuters standing too long at the bus stops is a forgotten issue.
According to him, the massive road rehabilitation, construction of fly overs and overhead bridges and drainage system when completed will improve and add value to the transportation system in the state.
He urged transporters and commuters to exercise patience as the construction works are going on in all the works and crannies of the state, noting that it is the only sacrifice and contribution needed to support and complement the efforts of the state government towards achieving the desired developmental programmes of the state.
Dr Nnokam enjoined the state government to monitor the slow pace of work experienced at the various project sites of most of the contractors handling the projects, saying that government should expedite actions in checking the tricks employed by the contractors as the effect is weighing heavily on the masses.
