BMTS Seeks Reduction Of Fuel Price
Following the excruciating hard times Nigerians are going through, warranted by the fuel subsidy removal, Bonny Maritime Transport Association (BMTA), an umbrella of Maritime Workers Union of Nigerian (MWUN), has urged the Federal Government to revert petroleum pump price to N200 per litre to reduce the sufferings of Nigerians.
The Association said the geometric increase on petrol pump price from N620 per litre by Federal Government has forced most boat operators out of business
BMTA also lamented that the increase has forced boat operators plying Bonny Island and other riverine communities in Rivers State to charge as much as N5000 per passenger.
Safety Officer, BMTA, Comrade Kins Dimkpe, disclosed this to The Tide during an interview in Port Harcourt.
Dimkpe, who insisted that the fuel subsidy removal is coming at a time when an average Nigerian is managing to eke out a living, called on Federal Government to revert to the old pump price of N200 per litre.
“The fuel subsidy removal is biting very hard on Nigerians, including the boat drivers, as we now buy a litre of fuel N610 to N620.
“Before, we charged N4000 per passenger to Bonny Island when the pump price was at N195 to N220 per litre, but now we charge N5000”, he said.
He appealed to government to revert to the old pump price to enable boat drivers stay in the business and provide for their families.
“We know that passengers are finding it difficult to travel by boat to Bonny and other riverine communities, but there is nothing we can do about the current situation”, Dimkpe sad.
The Mariner called on government “to alleviate the sufferings faced by the end users by reducing the pump price of petrol to enable the masses feel the dividend of democracy”.
Dimkpe called on the Federal Government to come up with a more positive palliative measures to cushion the effects on the people, noting that a lot of school children in the state have already dropped out of school as their parents could hardly cater for their school fees and sundry expenses.
