Controversy Trails Suspect’s Death In Police Custody In PH

Controversy is trailing the alleged death of a suspect, one Life Sunday, who was reportedly killed while being detained at the custody of Octopus crack team of the Rivers State Police Command.
While the family has been raising accusations on police being responsible for his death, the police have denied the allegation.
Instead, the police said that the suspect died as a result of gunshot injury he sustained during a gun duel with police and members of his kidnap gang.
The spokesperson of the police command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, while reacting to the allegation, said the reports from the Octopus crack team indicated that the late Life Sunday died during exchange of gun fire with policemen and his kidnapping gang.
She described the deceased as a member of a kidnapping gang which took a woman into captivity, and upon taking the police where they kept their victim after his arrest, his gang members, on sighting police operatives, opened fire, and in the process, he died.
However, the family has raised alarm over the circumstances of the death of their son in the custody of Octopus Strike Force of the Rivers State Police Command.
Elder brother of late Life Sunday, Leegbari Sunday, in a telephone interview with journalists in Port Harcourt, last Wednesday, said his late brother was arrested around Odani area, Elelewon in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on October 7, 2022, by operatives of the Octopus crack team.
Leegbari, who further disclosed that the police personnel at Octopus Strike Force had told them that their brother was arrested based on a petition written by a prominent person in Ogoni, who alleged that the suspect was a notorious person.
He said the police did not allow his brother access to them or his lawyer, adding that theytold the police to charge their brother to court, if he has committed any crime but the police declined.
He further revealed that, recently, the family got information about his death through one of those who were detained with their brother, alleging that he died in police custody out of torture.
Leegbari called on the Commissioner of Police, Effiong Okon, to direct the Octopus Strike Force to produce their brother (Life Sunday) in public or in court, if they claim he was alive.
