IAUE Gets Accolade For Service To Humanity
The National University Commission (NUC) accreditation Team Lead to Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, Professor Julius Abiola Ademokoya, has commended the university for its service to humanity through the Special Education Unit in the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling.
Professor Ademokoya gave the commendation recently during the exit meeting of the NUC accreditation team at the Council Chambers of IAUE.
He expressed displeasure over the fact that some universities in the country are yet to see the need to include Special Education in their programmes and thanked IAUE for not only deeming it fit to have the programme, but for making the programme wax stronger with the physical, human and material resources put into it.
According to him, what it would take to cater for a regular student will be three times the amount used to cater for those with biological, intellectual deficiencies and physical disabilities.
Ademokoya hailed the university for the huge investment in converting seemingly human waste to resources and urged IAUE to tap into the beauty with the establishment of audiological clinic that can serve both the university and its environs.
He stated that “being able to access the intelligence quotient of those with disabilities can internally generate revenue for the institution”.
The team leader from the University of Ibadan thanked the Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Vincent Asuru; the Head, Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Professor Doris Dorothy Chikodi Inko-Tariah; and the Unit Head, Dr Samuel Ubani, for being part of the department of transformation, also known as miracle workers.
He expressed hope that the university would continue in the good spirit until the unit becomes recognised as a centre of excellence.
In his remarks, the Acting Registrar, IAUE, Mr Donald Okogbaa, who stood in for the Vice Chancellor, who was at Abuja attending the 60th anniversary celebration of the National Universities Commission (NUC), thanked the team for placing emphasis on Special Education, saying the University would collaborate with the University of Ibadan to move the Department forward.
“The programme is a call to duty, a wake up call for those without disabilities to assist in ensuring better life and education for those with Special Needs”, he said.
Mr Okogbaa promised that the University would implement recommendations made in the areas of deficiencies.
