Nigeria’s 62nd Anniversary: Stakeholders Harp On Sober Reflection

Stakeholders in Osun have called on Nigerians, especially those in leadership positions to use the Nigeria 62nd Independence anniversary for sober reflection and soul searching.
They made the assertions in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Osogbo on the nation’s 62nd Independence.
According to them, the 62nd Independence anniversary should be for sober reflection and soul searching by Nigerians, especially those in leadership positions.
In his remarks, Mr Charles Adeyemi, the Executive Director of Charleston Foundation and Associates, an NGO, said insecurity was one of the major challenges confronting the country and hindering growths and developments, even after 62 years of independence.
Adeyemi said that due to the spate of insecurity in the country, many lives had been lost, while the economy was in a state of comatose.
He said that many investors and multinational companies that wanted to invest in Nigeria had relocated to other countries due to insecurity.
According to him, the need for security agencies to continue to protect lives and property from the bandits and terrorists becomes paramount.
Adeyemi urged the Federal Government to seek for international supports in fighting terrorism and banditry, adding that such would go a long way in putting an end to it.
He said with diverse challenges facing the country, there was nothing to celebrate “except our unity as one entity”.
Also, Mr Ibrahim Olayinka, the Coordinator, Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON), urged the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Olayinka said at 62, Nigeria was supposed to have passed the stage of shutting down universities in the country over non-payment of allowances for lecturers.
