Invest In Adolescent Girls To Expand Opportunities, Skillsets, UNFPA Advises FG

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has urged governments around the globe to invest in adolescent girls to expand their opportunities, resources and skillsets.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Media Associate of the Fund in Nigeria,Kori Habib, in Abuja.
Habib stated that the Fund made the call inthe findings of its research that revealed that nearly a third of women in developing countries begin childbearing at age 19 or younger.
She added that the research findings, released, yesterday in New York, stated that if governments invest in adolescent girls and boost their opportunities, it would help to avoid early and unintended pregnancies.
The media associate quoted the UNFPA Executive Director, Dr Natalia Kanem, as saying “the repeat pregnancies we see among adolescent mothers are a glaring signpost that they desperately need sexual and reproductive health information and services.”
She added that complications from childbirth were leading causes of death and injury for adolescent girls.
Kanem said that being an adolescent mother could also lead to grave violation of human rights and serious social consequences, including child marriage, intimate-partner violence and mental health issues as child mothers face the highest risks.
The executive director, therefore, stressed the need for governments to invest toward expanding adolescent girls’ resources and skills.
She said “when girls can meaningfully chart their own life course, motherhood in childhood will grow increasingly rare.”
The report of the research recommended that policymakers should provide girls with comprehensive sexuality education, mentorship, social support, and quality health services.
It also recommended increased support for families and engagement of local organisations within a supportive policy and legal framework that recognises the rights, capacities and needs of adolescents.
UNFPA is the UN sexual and reproductive health agency with the mission to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted; every child birth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
The Fund calls for the realisation of reproductive rights for all and access to sexual and reproductive health services, including quality maternal healthcare.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.
This commendation was contained in a press release made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt.
According to the Head of Service, Governor Fubara has continued to demonstrate uncommon commitment to the welfare of civil servants in Rivers State, stressing that such gestures underscore his people-oriented leadership style. She urged civil servants across the state to remain supportive of the governor’s administration in order to sustain good governance and effective public service delivery.
Speaking on behalf of the Body of Permanent Secretaries, Dr. Brown congratulated Governor Fubara on the occasion of his 51st birthday, describing him as “a Governor who leads by serving.”
She further praised the governor’s service-driven and people-centred leadership approach, noting that it has significantly contributed to institutional stability and improved efficiency within the state’s public service. Special appreciation was expressed for the approval of a befitting accommodation complex for Permanent Secretaries, which she said reflects the governor’s commitment to staff welfare and enhanced productivity.
As part of activities to mark the governor’s birthday, the Body of Permanent Secretaries announced the sponsorship of 329 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for indigent students across the state.
A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.

The Body of Permanent Secretaries wished Governor Fubara continued good health, divine wisdom, and greater accomplishments in his service to the people of Rivers State.

Allegation of Disrespect to President Tinubu Unfounded — Rivers Government
