NSCDC Reassures On Safeguarding National Assets, Infrastructure
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Commandant General’s Special Anti Vandal Monitoring Unit (CG’s SAVMU) says it will not rest on its oars until its mandate of safeguarding all critical national assets and infrastructure across the federation was actualised.
The Unit Commander, DCC Brah Samson, said this while inaugurating the CG’s SAVMU in Port Harcourt recently.
Samson, who spoke via the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Command of NSCDS, DSC Olufemi Ayodele, hinted that the task of the Unit was not limited to fighting the menace of oil theft and illegal dealings in petroleum products, but to other areas.
According to him, its mandate extends to anything that has to do with safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure, such as safe-guarding oil pipelines and electrical power installations.
Others are, Water pipes, telecommunication masts and gadgets, as well as all infrastructure that are critical to the government and the corporate existence of the nation at large.
He also informed that the Unit has been resolute in the fight against illegal oil bunkering activities, which led to impounding five tankers loaded with products suspected to be petroleum products recently in the State.
About two of the tankers, he said, have about 33,000 litres capacity, one has about 40,000 litres, another 45,000 litres, and the last was about 15,000 litres capacity of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) .
“The Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, in his renewed vigour to combat the menace of illegal dealings in petroleum products across the federation, inaugurated the CG’s SAVMU, to enhance the protection of all critical national assets and infrastructure in the nation.
“The CG’S SAVMU, upon arrival in Rivers State, swung into action and impounded the trucks at Abuloma, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Abu Tambuwal, has directed that a thorough investigation be made to apprehend the suspects as plans are to approach the court after the conclusion of investigation.
