NCC Seeks Authors, Creators’ Collaboration On IP Protection
As the world marks the International Intellectual Property(IP) day, the Nigerian Copyright Commission(NCC) has urged authors and creators to collaborate with the agency.
Rivers State Acting State Coordinator, Mr. Joseph Ojika while addressing newsmen Tuesday as part of activities to mark the IP Day in Port Harcourt said registration and patent of works with NCC is one sure way to protect creative works from being stolen.
Mr Ojika said Rivers State office of the NCC is doing all it can to curb all kinds of intellectual theft hence the need to enlighten the public.
Highlighting on this years theme,” Youth: Innovation for a Better Future ,”Mr. Ojika who read the address of the Director General of NCC, Dr. John Asein said the target on youths is to ensure that young creators of works in music, books and other patented materials would latch on the services of the commission, so as to reap from their efforts.
The NCC DG while commending youths in Nigeria for their creativeness, noted that Nigeria has the highest start up ecosystem in Africa.
As major players in the intellectual property system, he pointed out that youths need to be given support and encouragement to thrive.
Part of the support, he stated that the NCC is providing is to harness youth creative potentials through a legal framework to secure their intellectual resource.
This policy he reiterated will help boost innovations, drive the economy and remove every hiccup that stifles creativity and national development.
He said, “ investing in the creative and innovative potentials of the youth creates nexus between the latter and larger society. “
The NCC boss therefore urged youths to freely explore their creative and innovative potentials in order to improve their conditions and society by utilising the intellectual property system available in the country.
