NGO Screens 30,000 Women For Cervical Cancer
Women within the reproductive ages of 25 to 49, especially those living with HIV/AIDS, have been advised to take advantage of the free cervical cancer screening to engender a quality life and to prevent cancer disease.
Speaking at the State Technical Working Group meeting with other health stakeholders in Port Harcourt, the Programme Lead for Cervical Cancer Secondary Prevention Programme for Rivers State and representive of Clinton Health Access Initative, a non- governmental organisation in the State, Dr Julie Yemi-Jonathan, said cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancers in Nigeria and the first leading cause of death in the world.
Yemi-Jonathan said Women living with HIV /AIDS are more vulnerable to contracting the disease due to their low immunity state and as such should go for routine cervical cancer screening yearly in the 50 designated public health facilities in 19 LGAs her organisation is currently working with in the State.
The health expert equally asked other women who have tested negative to HIV/AIDS to carry out their cervical cancer investigation every three to five years period.
She further disclosed that her organisation is at the moment working in Rivers, Kaduna and Lagos States and has successfully screened about 30,144 women for cervical cancer between 2021 to date, adding that, out of the figure screened, 3000 women are living with HIV/ AIDS.
In addition , she said about 600 women with pre-cancer lesion have been treated and assured to give referrals, directories and contacts to those with similar cases to be screened and treated.

Technology Key to Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Development, Says Computer Scientist
Dr. Legborsi Emmanuel, former state Chairman of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), has emphasized that technology is the sure way for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
He made this assertion while speaking with newsmen at the sideline of 118th inaugural lecture series of Rivers State University (RSU) held in port Harcourt, wednesday.
He stressed that the lecture, which focused on emerging technology and its impact on the socio-economic development of the country, aligns with the NCS’s economic focus.
He highlighted the importance of building an economy driven by technology, citing the success of the Rivers State Smart Economy policy as an example.
The computer scientist emphasized the need for innovation and doing things differently, asserting that “technology is the only way out” for Nigeria’s development. He praised the lecturer, Professor Mathias Daniel, for exploring the applications of technology in various sectors, including agriculture, industry, transport, and socio-economics.
Dr. Emmanuel underscores the critical role technology plays in driving socio-economic growth and development in Nigeria by leveraging technology, the country can unlock new opportunities and address pressing challenges.
