Job Synergises With ONELGA Stakeholders To Tackle Illegal Bunkering
The Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Hon. Vincent Job, has convened stakeholders’ meeting on the lingering illegal bunkering activities in the state to brainstorm on effective ways of getting local solutions to the menace.
Job, who said the meeting was held with a view to putting forward practical and proactive measures that would address the ‘Kpo fire’ challenge in the local government area, noted that the meeting was significant and the challenge a matter of concern to all stakeholders.
The council boss, while addressing the stakeholders, last Saturday, at the local government council pavilion, Omoku said, the issue of artisanal refining is a national one, which has affected every strata of the Nigerian economy and has continued to be a source of concern to all and sundry.
Worried by the incessant and unwholesome activities of the local refiners, Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had moved to stop the menace, having identified some men of the security agencies as culprits.
“As a council, we have convened this meeting to cascade the governor’s message to the grassroots through you.
“May I use this opportunity to commend men of Traceguard Security Company Limited for their gallantry and support in the fight against illegal oil refining, and also commend the management of PAJAH Agency Security Limited for swinging into action in the fight to reduce the ugly incident.
“There is what we call illegal bunkering. A lot of the waste that is produced is disposed into our environment, and it is affecting the health of our people. We are here to beg you to help us end this problem.
“If the activities of these vandals and illegal operators continue unabated, the socio-economic lives of our people as well as the environment will be seriously affected”, he said.
He, therefore, enjoined all traditional rulers, chairmen of Community Development Committees, youth bodies and other stakeholders to brace-up to the challenge by co-operating with the task force already constituted by the council to identify and report any such illegal refining site for further action.
Not pleased with the attendance of youth groups for the meeting, Job warned that henceforth, any youth body not present at such meetings would face proscription.
He appealed to all stakeholders to re-assure government of their collective resolve to fight illegal bunkering activities in the local government.
The various speakers commended the effort of the council chairman in combatting illegal refining of crude oil in the local government and the setting up of a committee to tackle the menace squarely.
The meeting had in attendance two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly representing ONELGA constituency.
