Union Urges FG, RSG To Deploy Gunboats To Rivers Waterways

The Bonny Maritime Transport Association (BMTA), an affiliate body of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, (MWUN), Rivers State Branch, has called on the federal and state governments to deploy more gunboats to Rivers State to curb incessant attacks and abduction of boat passengers on the waterways.
The Tide reports that gunmen, suspected to be pirates, abducted a 11-passenger boat last week along Bonny/Bodo waterways.
BMTA said the deployment of gunboats by government would reduce cases of attacks on passengers and drivers plying the waterways.
Marine Safety Officer, BMTA, Comrade Dum Kings, stated this while reacting to the attack and abduction of 11 boat passengers at Bonny and Bodo waterways by suspected sea criminals in the state.
The body called on the security agencies in the state to intensify security operations across the creeks and channels in the state, especially at Bonny/ Bodo routes.
He alleged that the Marine Police had abandoned its duty to clamp down on sea pirates and other criminality along the waterways, while only concentrating on chasing illegal oil bunkerers.
Comrade Kings appealed to security agencies to ensure regular patrol of the waterways to reduce acts of piracy and criminality in the creeks.
He noted that piracy and other forms of criminality in riverine communities had scared away investors and passengers from patronising the state water transportation.
The safety officer urged the security agents to arrest and prosecute sea robbers that terrorise boat drivers and passengers in the state.
He admonished community leaders and youth groups to report any suspected pirate or boat driver who indulges in criminal act to the police for arrest and prosecution in order to make the state’s waterways safe and secure for travellers.
