Lions Club, US Group Partner On Free Eye Treatment
The Lions Club International, District 404A2, Region 6, Port Harcourt New Garden City in partnership with Eye Surgical Expedition America, United States of America has carried out free eye treatment on patients in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
President of Lions Club, Port Harcourt New Garden City, Engr. Iseleye Amachree, said this at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, venue of the event, adding that as the largest service organisation, the club was focusing basically on eliminating blindness.
He explained that the week-long free project, though capital intensive, the club’s objective and interest in service to humanity and providing succour to the less privileged.
He called on wealthy Nigerians as well as good spirited individuals to help in alleviating the sufferings of the poor masses.
The Head, Eye Surgical Expedition, America, Dr John Million, reiterated the determination of his team to eliminate blindness in Nigeria.
Million disclosed that the health team would proceed to Bayelsa State at the end of its outreach in Rivers State.
The Head, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Dr Mrs Elizabeth Awoyesuku, said that cataract accounts for more than 50 per cent of blindness worldwide. He noted that though, cataract was associated with age, but stressed that trauma and steroids could also lead to the desease.
