Maritime Union Tasks LGA On Passengers’ Lounge
The Bakana Boat Drivers Association in Rivers State has called on Degema Local Government Council to build a befitting lounge for drivers and travellers in the area.
The association also decried the state of dilapidation jetties in the local government and appealed to the council chairman, Dr. Tony Philmoore to reconstruct them for optimum use.
Speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt yesterday, Mr. Tubotamuno Amachree, member, Bakana Boat Drivers Association Abonnema Wharf, said the absence of a modern lounge in the council had hampered their operations.
He lamented that passengers and drivers plying the route suffer daily as there is no facility to shelter them during the rain.
The drivers said that the construction of a lounge in the area would also generate revenue to the council and improve modern water transport system in Degema.
Amachree told The Tide that sometimes passengers wares were carted away by criminals because of lack of facility to store them.
He called on the council to build a police station in the jetties to protect lives and property.
Tubotamuno, who frowned at the spate of boat accidents in the state, appealed to the ministry of transport to provide marine transporters with life vests to minimise loss of lives.
