The Rivers State Government has described the measles vaccination campaign as a priority for all children, saying that it could not have come at a better time than now.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof Princewill Chike made the declaration during the flag-off of the measles vaccination campaign in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Chike noted that the future of the children was dependent on parents, wards and caregivers, and described the vaccination campaign as apt and timely.
The commissioner explained that the first phase of the campaign had started in more than half of the local government areas.
He listed the LGAs to include Eleme, Emohua, Gokana, Ikwerre, Khana, Obio/Akpor, Ogu/Bolo, Okrika, Omuma, Oyigbo, Port Harcourt and Tai.
Chike charged every mother, parent, and adult to make sure that their children are vaccinated.
He dispelled rumours that the vaccination was designed to paralyse children or cause any harm to them, explaining that it was aimed at giving the children a life without health complications in future.
Speaking also, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board (RSPHCCMB), Dr. Harry Agiriye, stated that ground work had been done to dispel the unfortunate rumour against immunization experienced last year.
“So far, all the necessary ground work has been done to dispel the unfortunate rumour that happened last year.
“We had some pockets of resistance in Ahoada-West and the riverine areas, but I think all that has been taken care of”, Agiriye added.
He explained that 100 per cent was expected to be achieved in this year’s measles vaccination campaign, and called for the collaboration of other health partners to ensure this was achieved.
“Because we want 100 per cent vaccination, and we don’t want anyone left out of it. We are collaborating with everyone that has something to do with health.
“This includes the military, paramilitary, churches, the entire social institutions such as schools, just to make sure that we don’t miss anybody, so, the plan is quite inclusive”, he added.
Agiriye charged all parents not to be afraid, as the medical teams attend to their children, adding that the only way to indentify the health team was by recognising the identify cards, immunization aprons, adding that they are seven in number.
He stressed that they were not expected to go to private houses, but to the designated health facilities for immunization.
