NADECO Seeks Review Of Nigeria …Plans Confab In US

The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), has resurfaced with a call for the restructure of the country to reflect the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians in view of the widespread agitations for self-determination by various ethnic nationalities and groups in the country.
To this end, the group is planning a national conference in conjunction with the Institute for Strategic and Development Studies in Washington D.C, the United States of America.
NADECO, which dropped the hint while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt last Monday said, as a body, which fought in 1994 for the enthronement of democracy in the country, it would not watch and see the country disintegrate on the altar of such agitations as it strongly believes in one Nigeria.
The point man of NADECO in Rivers State, Comrade Uyi Meshack, who spoke on behalf of the group, said the review of the country on the basis of justice, equity and fairness was the best option, to reduce to the barest minimum the current tension and agitations, stressing that the group was today treading a middle course to ensure that various agitations were harmonised so as to sustain the current democratic dispensation. He said the group did not have faith in the 1999 constitution amendment process embarked upon by the National Assembly, saying, “as presently constituted, the National Assembly would not be able to give Nigerians a constitution of their dream”. The present constitution, he said, was a contradiction as it was purely fashioned by the military, saying, “Nigerians actually need today a pro-people Constitution, to douse the current tension and agitations in the country”. He, however, explained that NADECO did not intend to draft a constitution for the country but to aggregate all the views and positions of the various groups at the National Conference slated for November 13-18, 2017.
