Monarch Alerts On Environmental Pollution
The Amanyanabo of Ogu Kingdom, His Majesty, King Nicholas Dickson Ibiebele Nimenibo, Loko IX has again raised alarm over environmental and water pollution in the area.
King Nimenibo raised the alarm when members of the Wakirike Ijaw Women Association paid him a courtesy visit in his palace at Ogu in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
The Ogu monarch said the burning of petroleum products by the Military Joint Tasksd Force (JTF) in the area has polluted the eco-system that fisherfolk could no longer carry out their occupation.
According to him, there are no longer fishes in the waters because of the polluted waters, thereby causing untold hardship, suffering and starvation to the fisherfolk.
The king who also decried the activities of illegal bunkering activities said even seafoods like priwinkle, oyster, crab, bongafish, as well as the mangrove are being affected because of their activities activities and called for a mature and civilised way of going about the activities inorder to avoid untimely deaths and ill-health which is ravaging the communities in the area.
The monarch who said urgent steps should be taken to ameliorate the sufflering of the people, appealed to the military and those engaging in illegal bunkering activities not to endanger the lives and liverlihood of the fisherfolk as their source of income and good living had been jeopadised.
The Monarch also decried indecent dressing by youths especially girls, the declining culture and tradition of the people of Wakirike ethnic nationality and the nonchalant attitude shown to the speaking of mother tongue.
Earlier, the leader of the group, Mrs Gift Amangi Edmund Kalio thanked the Ogu monarch for the warm reception and also condemned the activities of illegal bunkerers indecent dressing and the, dwindling cultural and traditional values among others and appealed for all hands to be on deck to create a better society.
