How To Make Nigeria Better – Wike
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, says merit, pro-activeness, fairness and equity by the citizens and leaders are the sure path to better Nigeria.
He made the assertion while playing host to the National Executive Council of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) led by its President, Malam Mohammed Moulud, yesterday, in Government House, Port Harcourt.
The governor observed that the current clamour for restructuring by various groups and sections of the country were as a result of the way the country is being run without recourse to equity and fairness.
Wike said there was nothing wrong with the country’s structure except for the lack of proactive leadership, and doing things the right way.
“When things are not done the way they are supposed to be done, people will clamour. When you do the right thing, everybody will be happy”.
The Rivers State governor decried that in a situation where things are done based on connections, tribe and self-interest, the country will continue to wobble and stagnate, as he insisted that, “there are things that we should not do on quota, but on merit.”
He equally blamed the police as a major stumbling block to the country’s democracy.
While calling on the association to support in the quest to make the country better, Wike assured the group that he will continue to champion for a better Nigeria, stressing that, “we would continue to work and tell the Federal Government but as far as we are concerned, the unity of this country is not negotiable.”
Earlier, President of STAN, Malam Mohammed Moulud thanked the governor for the support he gave in the hosting of the association’s conference in the state.
He informed the governor of the body’s current plans of developing a national secretariat and building the capacity of science teachers, disclosing that already the second phase of the project had commenced and was located in Abuja.
Moulud also said Wike was being decorated as the patron of the association as part of the diamond jubilee anniversary of the body, as he commended him for his administration’s policy of encouraging the study of science and technology in schools.
