Obuah: A Service-Oriented Leader
There are leaders. And there are always leaders. No matter the qualms and disillusions of the ever-disappointed followers with their leaders, there are leaders, service-oriented leaders the people always yearn for at every point in time.
This stock of leaders, eclipsed in the unperceived corner of the society, is usually blown to light by the tidal wave of events.
Bro Felix Obuah, the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chairman, Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), is one of such rare leaders.
The two key positions Obuah occupies did not come on the platter of gold but by dint of hard work and sacrifice. It happened that in 2014, the PDP in the State suddenly faced the threat of possible demise. The then state leadership, initially, on the platform of the party (PDP) moved with almost all the state apparatus and party structures to the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC), a coalition of opposition political parties then and now the ruling party at the centre. This situation posed serious threat to the PDP in the State.
Worried by this development, the remaining prominent stakeholders in the PDP led by Chief Nyesome Wike, then Minister of State for Education (now Rivers State Governor and supported by Bro Felix Obuah, decided to challenge the situation. The party reacted with formidable measures, and thus squared up with the ugly development to put the party back in shape.
The situation was almost reminiscent of the Gulf War of the 1980’s when America, the leader of Gulf war against Sadam Hussein of Iraq, thought that once the formidable allied forces struck, Sadam would cease to exist.
But it was not to be. The war, which was hoped to last a few days after American forces launched an attack, raged on for months to the extent that Sadam’s Scot missiles frustrated the American-built anti-Scot missiles planted in Israel and Iran and wrecked havoc in these countries, fulfilling Sadam’s earlier threat to attack them should he be attacked by the allied forces.
The allied forces had to restrategise to win the war against Sadam after spirited efforts.
And so it was in Rivers State between PDP and APC stakeholders. The State PDP, after initial fool-proof measures, couldn’t cage the defectors. The party, however, restrategised, with Governor Wike in the forefront, assisted by Bro Felix Obuah. At the end, they won the battle to reposition the party in the State.
Little wonder that the party’s chairmanship in the State fell creditably on Obuah. With his able leadership, the party won all the state and federal seats in the State in the 2015 general elections and reconsolidated itself, once again.
What, therefore, should be the consideration for such a leader in the scheme of things of the party? Of course, the sky is the limit.
Following the inauguration and swearing-in of Chief Wike as the governor of the State, on May 29, 2015, His Excellency set up his cabinet and placed Bro Felix Obuah at the environmental sanitation arm of his administration.
It was seen in some quarters as misplacement. Others saw it as a temporary action to be redressed soonest. But two years have gone into the administration and Bro Obuah is still at the environmental sanitation agency working assiduously, dedicatedly and passionately.
In his position as Chairman of Rivers State Waste Management Agency, Obuah has improved on waste management in the State by regular waste disposals and by providing waste recepticles within reasonable distances that have made waste disposal quite convenient in urban cities.
He has also introduced the Residential Sanitation Inspection Scheme, long abandoned, to drive home the sanitation consciousness into the people, once again.
Although, Bro Obuah had earlier carved a niche for himself in private capacity as a philanthropist, his standings in the State chapter of the PDP has further made him a shining star. His passion, dedicated and calm disposition to duty in RIWAMA, particularly reveals his service-oriented nature and further unfolds his noble quality as a humble and committed people’s leader.
That Bro Obuah chooses to serve the people in the unceremonious capacity, amidst golden choices, demonstrates the height of humility, passion and commitment of a service-oriented leader. By this, Obuah has not only surprised observers, but also outrightly and unwittingly created for himself a teeming crop of admirers who identify, fancy, appreciate and salute his unique leadership model. Ride on Sir.
