Displaced Mile One Flyover Traders Appeal To RSG
Displaced traders at the Mile One Flyover in the Diobu Area of Port Harcourt, have appealed to the Rivers State Government to as a matter of urgency provide an alternative place for them to do business or rescind its decision.
One of the traders, Emmanuel Uzor who sells bread in the area, told journalists that with the destruction of his shade, he was finding it difficult to make ends meet with several dependents on him for their survival.
Uzor noted that the order by the government that they relocate to the Rumuwoji market along Afikpo Street close to the Mile One Police Station was unrealistic as the area was already overcrowded with traders as a result of insufficient space.
Another affected trader at the flyover, Bartholomew Wogu, pointed out that their eviction was very frustrating as most of them who do not have jobs, have depended on trading in the area for several years.
Wogu lamented that their children and wards may be forced out of school for failure to pay school fees following the destruction of their wares and shops by the Rivers State Government.
The trader argued that what the government would have done, was to first provide them an alternative area rather than the present approach to beautify Port Harcourt which, he said, has affected over 40,000 persons made up of traders, buyers, transporters and other members of the public.
Ugochukwu, another trader affected by the eviction exercise, appealed to the state government not to sack traders and other business operators at the Mile One flyover who have been fending for themselves and other dependents by being self-employed.
He noted that such action could lead to increase in crime rate in the state as a lot of persons who have been legitimately providing for themselves may go for illegitimate means of livelihood.
Ugochukwu queried why an alternative place was not provided for traders and other business operators in the area.
He wondered how they can pay their house rents, light bills, children school fees and other family and social responsibilities with their eviction from the mile one flyover.
A female trader at the flyover, Mrs Isaac Okon Johnson who claimed to be a widow and yam, plantain and fish, enjoined other traders to appeal to Governor Wike to reconsider the quit order.
