Champion Women Emancipation, Banigo Tells Lawyers
The Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has urged African women to look inwards in order to advance their aspiration and actualize their potentials in life.
Banigo stated this today when members of the African Women Lawyers Association, Rivers State Chapter paid her a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.
She noted that some of the abuses suffered by women especially the girl child are self-propagated, and regretted the over-bearing effect of the African setting which has led to unending cases of rape, female genital mutilation and other forms of violence against women.
“This trend is a struggle in African set-up because most forms of abuse on women are propagated by our women, which often lead to their destruction”, Banigo stated.
Banigo called for more women participation in the campaign to speak against all forms of violence being perpetrated against women and children.
The deputy governor commended the association for its passion in promoting the wellbeing of women and the girl child, stressing that there is the urgent need for greater awareness to be created on the increasing cases of violence against women.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the African Women Lawyers Association, Rivers State Chapter, Mrs. Cordelia Eke, had said the association was passionate about issues that undermine and threaten the lives of women and children in Africa and Rivers State in particular with a view to liberating them from the bondage of traditional harmful practices.
She enjoined parents and children to speak out on cases of rape and abuse to enable relevant government agencies and organisations to come to their assistance.
