Elder Statesman Cautions Avengers Against Destruction Of N’Delta
A Niger Delta Activists, Dr
Sokari Soberekon has cautioned the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) new militant group in the region to tread with caution as their activities could damage the environment.
The elder statesman who said this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said that the continuous destruction of pipelines and other oil installations would bring calamity to the region.
“This new militant group is not doing Niger Delta people any good rather the people are being exposed to oil pollution and fire is burning and destroying the region”.
Dr Soberekon said that rather than destroying the pipelines, a more peaceful means should be devised to get the attention of the Federal Government towards addressing the injustice being meted to the region.
He also stressed the need for members of the National Assembly from the region to comeback home with a view to convening a conference to discuss the looming crisis in the Niger Delta region.
Dr Soberekon also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the demands of the Niger Delta Avengers by implementing some of them and particularly urged the president to implement the Goodluck Jonathan’s National Conference report while soldiers be withdrawn from the streets of the Niger Delta to the barracks.
He also advised youths of the region to leave militancy and take their books “as a reader is a leader”.
The elder statesman also called on the state government to upgrade the Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic to a degree awarding institution, while taxation on the derivation principle to Niger Delta States be abolished.
