UPTH: Patients Lament Health Workers’ Strike
Health services at the
University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) have drastically gone down, following the on-going strike embarked by members of the Joint Health Workers Union of the institution.
Some of the patients who spoke with The Tide expressed displeasure over this development as the doctors were overwhelmed with work. One of the out-patient at the hospital, Mr Maxcel Chima said the rate of strike action at UPTH calls for concern.
“This is a major health institution in Port Harcourt that patients could be referred to, but every now and then you hear about strike, and this is affecting service delivery in this hospital.
“I have seen a doctor, but the drugs he recommended could not be purchased because the pharmacists are on strike likewise the laboratory technologists”, he said.
Meanwhile, efforts made to speak to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Aaron Ojule was not successful, as he was said to be on and off, seeking for how to resolve the problem but the Public Relations Officer, Mr Kem Nwosu told The Tide that negotiation was on going to end the strike.
He said that the management was waiting for signal from the Federal Ministry of Health on the next step to take, to end the strike.
