Fresh Arrests Target PDP Leaders, RSG Alerts
The Rivers State Government has condemned, in its entirety, a fresh orgy of arrest of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders by misguided security agencies, which it said are being used by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intimidate the ruling party in the state.
In a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr Austin Tam-George, the state government specifically condemned the arrest of a staff of the Mayor of Port Harcourt Local Government Area (PHALGA), and charged “PDP leaders and government functionaries to resist intimidation and unlawful arrest.”
The statement reads in part: “It has come to the attention of the Rivers State Government that some faceless individuals and groups in the state, sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC), have written petitions to security agencies, making frivolous allegations against chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and top government functionaries in Rivers State.
“The aim of these petitions is to instigate another round of politically-motivated arrests and harassment of innocent individuals. It is also part of a plan to conduct unlawful raids on the homes of government officials and leaders of the PDP in Rivers State.
“The Rivers State Government strongly condemns this latest attempt to disturb the peace of the state, and wishes to warn that intimidation and unlawful arrests by security forces will be resisted by the people of the state.”
The commissioner quoted the Executive Governor of the state, Chief Nyesom Wike, as urging “the people of the state to remain vigilant but to go about their businesses without fear.
“Governor Wike noted that these arrests are the latest plot by the APC to prepare the ground to rig the yet-to-be scheduled rerun elections, noting that these desperate attempts would fail.
“The governor also asked security agencies to always act within the law, and to refuse to be used by desperate politicians who have been totally rejected by the people of Rivers State,” the statement added.
