Rivers Rerun: Police Order Movement Restriction
The Rivers State Police Command has announced restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 19 for re-run legislative elections in the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, made the announcement in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
The statement said the decision was taken after due consultations with relevant stakeholders superintending the elections.
It said that the ban which would take effect from March 18 to March 20, would affect tricycles, motorcycles and engine speed boat with capacity of 200 horse power and above
“The Command further emphasises that Very Important Personalities are barred from going to any voting centre with their security escorts except for their unarmed orderly only.
“They are also to desist from moving about from one place to another on Election Day as provided by the electoral Act,” it said.
According to the statement, monitoring teams will be going around to ensure strict compliance and arrest security men accompanying any dignitary in such unauthorised manner.
It called for continued support and cooperation of the people to ensure free and credible polls.
Similarly, the Police have warned that it would deal swiftly with any individual whose act would threaten the conduct of Saturday’s parliamentary re-run polls in Rivers State.
Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, gave the warning at a joint news conference he held with Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, in Abuja.
Arase said that the security framework that had been put in place for the polls was civil enough to protect all political actors across party divide.
“Our political actors that believe in turning citizens to political thugs and cannon fodders to bear the fatal brunt of their political ambition should allow such thoughts to fade henceforth or be prepared to face the wrath of justice.’’
On his part, INEC chairman assured that the commission had taken every measure and precaution to ensure free, fair and credible election on Saturday.
He said that all personnel involved in the election had been warned against compromising the processes and procedures in any way, adding that “violators will be severely sanctioned.’’
Yakubu appealed to all political actors in Rivers to avoid statements and actions capable of breaching public peace so that the people of the state could choose their representatives in peace.
He said that INEC had engaged 24,930 ad hoc staff drawn from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and students of three tertiary institutions for the exercise.
The institutions, according to him, are University of Port Harcourt, the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku and the Federal University in Otuoke, Bayelsa.
“ In addition, we have engaged a total 379 Collation Officers and 37 Returning Officers from the three tertiary institutions mentioned earlier on the recommendations of their Vice Chancellors and Provost who vouched for their integrity.
Yakubu added that three National Commissioners and six Resident Electoral Commissioners had also been deployed for election duty in the state.
